Finishing as runners up in the Championship last season, Ipswich were one of the feel good stories of EFL football last year. Having been promoted from League one just a year earlier, noone harbored any expectations for the Tractor Boys heading into the 2023/24 season.
However, Ipswich looked comfortable from the outset, topping the table in the early stages and consolidating second place for much of the rest of the campaign. There was even a glimmer of hope of winning the Championship late in the season, after Leicester City’s form dropped off a cliff, but the foxes did just enough to go up as champions.
With back-to-back promotions, morale at Ipswich is as high as it will ever get, and there is determination at the club to ensure all of the hard work over the last two campaigns doesn’t come undone in 2024/25.
Best Result: Ipswich Town 4-3 Rotherham. (Ipswich: Moore 14’, Burns 9’, 29’, Hutchinson 90+5’. Rotherham: Eaves 2’, Odofin 60’, Cafu 90+4’)
Worst Result: Leeds 4-0 Ipswich Town. (Struijk 8’, Davis O.G. 25’, Summerville 45’, Piroe 52’).
Ipswich fans will be buoyant after manager Keiran McKenna committed himself to the club, despite concrete interest from Premier League big dogs Chelsea and Manchester United. The Englishman was appointed midway through the 2021/22 season and guided Ipswich to a mid-table finish.
The season after, Ipswich started their meteoric rise through the tiers of English football, finishing second in League one behind Plymouth Argyle, and second in the Championship behind Leicester City.
With limited resources, the source of the Tractor Boys’ success is all down to McKenna’s man management and tactical nous, and after two brilliant seasons, it is easy to see why some of the biggest clubs in the country are chasing his signature.
Keeping him will be a real coup for Ipswich, and if they are to survive their first season back in the top flight in over 20 years, McKenna is the one and only man who should be at the helm.

After a breakout loan spell with Ipswich last season, in which Hutchinson scored 10 goals and set up a further five, Ipswich bit the bullet and shelled out £20 million on the 20-year-old. An electric talent who can play on either wing as well as centrally behind the striker, it seems like poor business from former employers Chelsea.
A dynamic midfielder who dribbles well, spots narrow openings for passes and has a wand of a left boot, Hutchinson could prove to be their main man as the season goes on, akin to what Wilfried Zaha did for Crystal Palace for a number of seasons.
Combining Hutchinson with exciting former Manchester City talent Liam Delap in attack could see them pose that little bit of extra attacking threat that newly promoted teams typically lack. Ipswich will certainly be entertainers this season.
Similar to Luton Town last season, no one is truly expecting Ipswich to stay up. They are a team that people enjoy watching while they are in the Premier League, but have a “short but sweet” kind of relationship with.
There has been a growing agreement that it is getting harder for newly promoted teams to stay up, perfectly portrayed last season when all three of 2022/23’s promotees went back down to Championship.
However, with McKenna in charge, and with exciting signings already made this window (with a view to more being made), Ipswich are doing all the right things to give them a realistic shout of staying up.
I think they may just go down, but will push those above them to the very last matchday. I would also like to say I am totally prepared to be proven wrong.
