This week saw many clubs facing off in the FA Cup. Because of this, only one fixture has been played on Saturday, December 6th: a stalemate 0-0 draw between Colchester and Gillingham.

The game finished goalless, with neither side able to find the breakthrough. Both outfits came into the game hungry for a win, as that would have helped Colchester climb into a playoff place and it would've helped Gillingham further solidify their promotion push. This was a tight affair going into the match and it clearly showed on the pitch.
The first half offered glimpses of danger, particularly from Colchester: a flowing move nearly put them ahead around the 27-minute mark, when Kyreece Lisbie saw his strike deflected over for a corner by the Gillingham keeper. Gillingham had their moments too; a fierce effort cleared off the line in their box, and a deflected shot was saved well by Colchester’s goalkeeper.
In the second half, both sides pushed: Colchester’s Micah Mbick headed just wide from a cross, while Gillingham’s Bradley Dack had a volley and a lob attempt, both denied.
Defensively solid: Colchester kept a clean sheet again, extending their recent run to 4 clean sheets in the last 5 games, showing discipline and organisation.
Despite a bright start and some promising moments, Colchester struggled to convert pressure into consistent goal threats. According to their manager, they lacked “the attacking flair” that had served them in previous fixtures.
Gillingham’s game plan worked for a draw. They were well-organised defensively and managed to stifle Colchester’s momentum; their few attacks forward threatened but ultimately lacked the final product.

This was a result that underlines two things: a growing defensive solidity for Colchester, and a cautious pragmatism from Gillingham. For Colchester, the clean sheet should reassure, but they will know they need to sharpen their attacking output if they want to climb higher in the table. For Gillingham, the draw may feel like a missed chance, but they defended well enough to avoid defeat.
This result has kept Gillingham and Colchester just a point apart, with Gillingham on 29 and Colchester on 28. This finds them in 6th and 9th, respectively. Both sides are pushing for a play-off spot in a tight league table, where one fixture of dropping points can have huge effects. They will hope that after drawing today, Tuesday's fixtures won't have too big an effect on them.
The rest of League Two's Matchweek 19 fixtures will be played on Tuesday, December 9th, and Wednesday, December 10th.
