Leeds Midfielder Gyabi a Target for Championship Sides

21-year-old Leeds United midfielder Darko Gyabi has emerged as a potential target for Wrexham, Watford and Hull City, as well as French sides FC Lorient and FC Metz, with a deal likely before transfer deadline day.

While it is unclear whether a loan deal or a more permanent move is preferred for each club, it is clear that Gyabi is highly valued by second tier sides, after playing 48 times in all competitions for Plymouth Argyle last season as the Pilgrims were relegated.

Formerly of Manchester City’s famous youth academy, Leeds brought in the young English midfielder for over £4 million back in 2022, when Gyabi was aged just 18 years old. However, despite such a hefty price tag at this young age, he has only managed six Leeds appearances to date.

Is Gyabi Championship Quality?

Given that much of his experience has come while playing for an under-performing Plymouth side, it is hard to predict how Gyabi would play if a move to a more established second tier side materialised.

However, last season proved a formative one - the midfielder played 43 Championship games, and generally impressed in his holding midfielder role, scoring once and assisting twice in the process.

Playing the full 90 minutes in Plymouth’s shocking FA Cup win over Premier League champions Liverpool, Gyabi is certainly capable of playing the country’s top sides, and the likelihood is that his impending move will be a loan deal, allowing him to develop further before possibly being integrated into Leeds United’s first team.
