It’s fair to say Liverpool are not holding back in the transfer market - spending £430 million last summer on the likes of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak, the Reds have very much broken their tradition of targeting thrifty, value-for-money signings.
Well, many of us would be able to say with a strong degree of certainty that value for money can’t describe their season so far: Wirtz is yet to score for the club, Isak is out with a broken leg for the next two months with just two goals to his name, and Ekitike, the best signing by far, has very little support from his teammates, at times having to do it all by himself.

Liverpool seem to have come to the conclusion that the only way to rectify the situation is to spend yet more money - I would assume the remainder of the Coutinho funds - and now, ahead of the January transfer window, they are targeting Gremio winger Gabriel Mec, a Brazilian talent who many fans believe to be the next big thing.,
Aged just 17, and not turning 18 until April, Gabriel Mec is a name that has been making waves on the Brazilian youth scene. Though the left midfielder has just two senior appearances to his name, his six goals and six assists in 15 youth games have certainly caught the eye of some of Europe’s biggest names.
Already representing Brazil at the U17 level seven times, and scoring once, Mec’s style of play has already been likened to that of Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior and ex-Barcelona and PSG star Neymer Jr, high praise for one with just one professional season under his belt.
It is clear that Mec has supreme talent - Chelsea came very close to signing the teenager in early 2025, and given their trend of signing young talents with incredibly high ceilings, it is best not to question the judgement of the Blue’s talent scout. Shakhtar Donetsk were also on the brink of a deal for the wideman in September, but the move fell apart at the last moment.

A Joga Bonito baller🪄
Neymar-esque play-style and comes from the same academy (Grêmio) as Ronaldinho. Hard to not be excited by him🇪🇪

Lauded for his ability to play comfortably on both despite being in the early stages of his development, Gabriel Mec certainly has all the tools to become a top, top player - all he needs now is to be given the platform to build his empire.
Liverpool represents exactly this - Michael Owen, Trent Alexander Arnold, Jarrell Quansah, and the inimitable Steven Gerrard are testament to the fact that the Kirkby academy constantly produces players of high quality, and, although the above examples are all Englishmen, the club boasts all the necessary facilities to make a success of the young Brazilian.
Valued at €15, he would be a remarkably cheap purchase given Liverpool’s recent transfer history, and with the potential the 17-year-old obviously possesses, this figure could be made to look like the bargain of the century in years to come. Keep an eye on this story - should Liverpool sign Gabriel Mec, they will have secured one of the future's brightest stars.
