Mjallby Sensation On the Brink of Championship Move

Gambian Forward Close to Deal with Birmingham City

Though poor recent form has seen them fall away from the Championship play-off spots, the seven-point gap between Birmingham City and the top six is still far from unassailable, and the Blues seem prepared to go all out in the January transfer window to close in on their rivals.

Already targeting Newcastle starlet Alfie Harrison on a loan deal and Jhon Solis from Girona on a permanent deal, Birmingham City are only just starting their January outreach, and are currently rumoured to be searching for some extra attacking firepower.

Now, they seem to have identified the perfect target, with Mjallby and Gambian international Abdoulie Manneh reportedly on the brink of signing a contract at St Andrews.

All Good Things Come to An End

Some of you will remember us discussing Manneh before. After all, it is not often that a player scores a hat trick and assists a further two on their competitive international debut - Manneh did just this as Gambia romped to a 7-0 win over the Seychelles in October.

Cut from the same cloth as Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh, Manneh has all the tools to go right to the very top of the game - rapid pace, good decision-making in the final third, and an ever-growing reputation as one of Africa’s finest young exports in the last five years.

This season, he played a major role in Mjallby’s fairytale run to the Allsvenskan title, scoring seven goals and assisting three throughout the season, and despite his tender age of 21 and relative inexperience (he only has three professional seasons under his belt), he looks more than ready to make a big step in his career.

The choice to move to Mjallby instead of a more reputable European club massively helped his development, allowing him to grow and evolve as a player without being overly scrutinised and analysed like he would have been in Germany, England or France.

Now, with his reputation in Sweden growing close to critical mass, the January transfer window is the perfect time to find pastures new, and Birmingham City present the perfect next step for the Gambian with their ambitious future goals.

Fresh off the back of winning the League One title, there was a period where the Tom Brady-owned side were tipped for promotion, sitting just a couple of points back from the play-off spots.

While they now sit 14th, the club is still in close enough proximity to their rivals to consider themselves still in the race, and with winter reinforcements set to come in, Chris Davies' side could look like a completely new team come February the first.

Manneh has the potential to have a serious influence on Birmingham’s destiny - his direct nature, desire to take on his man, and knack for being in the right place at the right time are all traits central to succeeding in the Championship.

Moreover, he would be joining a side that have shown they can compete with the very best in the Championship, despite only recently earning promotion. Given the chance to grow and develop with the team, there is no reason why Manneh and Birmingham couldn’t earn their spot in England’s top flight in the near future.
