In football, particularly in the Premier League, there is always that one player sale that the selling party soon come to regret.
Scott McTominay, Mohamed Salah, Kevin de Bruyne... just a trio of names that have been let go by Premier League sides over top-flight seasons of old that the selling clubs (Manchester United and Chelsea - twice - respectively) have gone on to regret, with each player going on to achieve huge things for club and country after making departures that fans would not have looked twice at.
In some circumstances, the selling club will try and repay their own mistakes by bringing the sold player back to the club further down the line to mixed levels of success. Think of Xavi Simons with PSG or Romelu Lukaku heading back to Chelsea.
With one player from outside the 'Big 5' European leagues making huge waves for both his club and country, the Premier League side he once called home is looking to right their wrongs in the coming transfer windows by making a return possible for his services.
The club in question is Tottenham, and the player of the hour is one Troy Parrott.
The Irish striker had long been posed as a wonderkid by those in North London, but a stream of lukewarm loan spells in the EFL led to the Lilywhites eventually giving up on the then-22-year-old. A bid came in from Dutch giants AZ Alkmaar to the tune of just £6.7m, and Parrott left the Premier League behind to go into business for himself.

After a long stream of goals and a sensational pair of games for the Republic of Ireland shot Parrott into the limelight he was tagged as destined for, the wider footballing world have sat up and taken notice of the Dublin-born striker. He has registered a mighty 15 goals in 19 games for AZ this season, whilst also netting five goals in two games to take his nation within touching distance of the World Cup.
Tottenham are prepared to pay up to £32m to bring Parrott back to White Hart Lane in the coming windows, with his red-hot form found after making his own way onto the path to stardom pricking the ears of his former employers just enough to entertain a return.
Spurs also allegedly hold a 20% sell-on clause for Parrott, according to Fichajes.
The Irish striker has long been earmarked at White Hart Lane as a real talent for the future. After starting his career with Dublin-based amateur side Belvedere, Spurs picked Parrott up in 2017 for an undisclosed fee and tied him to his first professional contract in 2019 on the day of his 17th birthday. He became a prominent player at youth level for the North London side and made four first-team appearances for the club over the course of the 19/20 season.
Oh this is sensational. The limbs. The commentary.

All because former Millwall and Preston loanee Troy Parrott scored a hat trick winning goal in 90+ minute.

From that point, a string of lukewarm loan spells would come his way. Millwall, MK Dons, Ipswich Town and Preston would all offer the Irish striker a chance to shine in the EFL system to mediocre success before a spanner was thrown in the works in the form of Dutch Eredivisie side Excelsior. With this latest loan, Parrott finally showcased the player he was deemed to become with an excellent season comprised of 17 goals and five assists from 32 showings. With Tottenham still not convinced, AZ Alkmaar came in for his services for the nominal sum of £6.7m. Safe to say, he hasn't looked back (yet).
He scored 20 goals in 47 games for AZ as they finished 5th in the league and reached the Round of 16 for the Europa League, where they lost, funnily enough, to Tottenham, and has been on a tear this season with another 15 goals already, despite only playing 19 matches so far. Furthermore, he enjoyed the rollercoaster of emotions brought by Ireland's dramatic qualification to the World Cup playoffs, with his hat-trick - ended with a 96th-minute winner - enough to defeat Hungary and proceed just a few days after Parrott had scored a brace against Portugal to defeat Cristiano Ronaldo and co. 2-0.
Whilst returns often diminish, the links taking Parrott back to Tottenham are understandable to see and, dare I say, expected.
