Last five results when West Ham have played Chelsea:
Ending last season 9th in the table, it was a solid six and a half out of ten for the Hammers’. Having established themselves as a strong Premier League team since their promotion in 2012, they entered last year's campaign off the back of their first ever success in European competition, after winning the UEFA Conference League in dramatic fashion.
Jarrod Bowen continued his excellent form in front of goal, bagging another 16 league goals last year, while summer signing Mohammed Kudus shone in the slot behind the striker, contributing 14 goals and assists.
However, their form wilted towards the seasons close, and after 5-0 defeat to Chelsea in the middle of a rotten streak of form, it was announced that David Moyes would leave his position as head coach at the end of the season, with former Real Madrid coach Julen Lopetegui to take the reigns for the 2024/25 season.
With some positive moves in the transfer market already this summer, West Ham looks set to contest for a European spot in order to return to the elite tiers of European football.
Best result: Arsenal 0-2 West Ham. (Soucek 13’, Mavropanos 55’).
Worst result: Chelsea 5-0 West Ham. (Palmer 15’, Gallagher 30’, Madueke 36’, Jackson 48’, 80’).
The appointment of Julen Lopetegui could well mark the start of a new era for West Ham. He arrives with experience at top teams such as Spanish giants Real Madrid and Sevilla, while also having Premier League experience on his CV, having coached Wolves for the majority of the 2022/23 season.
A manager with experience in winning continental competitions, victorious in the Europa League with Sevilla in 2019/20, Lopetegui’s first order of business is to return the Hammers’ to that level of competition, a place which they have more than enough ability to reach.
With a typical Spanish style of play which involves dominating possession making the defense water-tight, West Ham fans and followers will be excited to see what kind of entertainment their side can provide this season. With such a talented manager at the helm, the big sides could be in for more than a few surprises.
The main attacking outlet out on the right flank for the Hammers’ over the last four seasons, Jarrod Bowen reached new heights last season. His 16 goals were his best return in a Premier League season to date, and six assists on top of that meant that he was involved in over a third of West Ham’s total goal tally in the league.
His form was impressive enough to earn him a spot in the England squad at Euro 2024, where made two appearances off the bench. Now with Southgate gone, Bowen is likely to be given more opportunities from the start for his nation, and if he performs anywhere near the standards of last season, he will be hard to ignore.
With a growing ability to play up front as well as out on his favored right, Bowen is continually honing his instinct for goals, and the more he plays for West Ham, the better he will get. Another season like last season will start to draw attention from bigger clubs, and almost any side in the world would benefit from the presence of Bowen in their starting line up.
Enjoy him while you can Hammers’...
With a new coach, a new £40 million defender in Max Kilman, and a new found belief they can compete with the big dogs, West Ham will be a troubling team to face this season. The squad seems almost perfectly tailored to someone like Lopetegui, and with the talent in the attacking side of the squad, don't be surprised if the Hammers’ are free-scoring this season.
The issue will be consistency. With their poor form at the back end of last season, where they won just two of their last eleven games, they cost themselves a real chance of European football this season, and all at the club will be keen to ensure that lightning doesn’t strike twice.
It may take a season for Lopetegui’s ethos to set in properly, but once it does, West Ham could become a real threat.
