What is the French Coupe de France format?

Similarly to other leagues across Europe, the France Coupe de France is a knockout-style tournament with each team from around France eligible to compete.

The competition has 14 rounds in total, with the early stages being determined by region. Regions conduct their own rounds in order to enter the later stages. Eventually, teams from both Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 enter, changing the competition to a random draw format.

All the games in the Coupe de France are single-leg fixtures, meaning there are no replays throughout. If a match ends in a draw, teams compete in penalty shootouts for a place in the next round - extra time was abolished a few years back.

Finally, at the end of the domestic league season, the final is played at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Villeneuve-d’Ascq, near Paris. The winner is awarded the Coupe de France trophy and a guaranteed spot in the UEFA Europa League.

Over the years, there have been 54 different winners of the competition. Of course, Paris Saint-Germain has won the title the most times (15) and is also the current holder. However, teams such as Marseille (ten-time winners), Saint-Etienne (six-time winners), and Lille (six-time winners) have also won it.

But which team will win the Coupe de France this season?
