This National Team Just Hit A New Low: Losing To Their OWN B Team

Football is no stranger to a shock upset.

With the sheer amount of football played all over the world, it is agreed that seeing a few unexpected outcomes every now and again is unavoidable.

And perhaps the stage which gives the most opportunity for a David vs Goliath type result to arise is international football.

Friendlies on the world stage often see some extremely random fixtures, but more competitive games, like qualifiers for big tournaments, or even the tournaments themselves, can host some bizarre matchups.

So, with that being said, the friendly between Burundi and Burundi B appeared a pretty tame and normal one…

But what transpired was anything but tame and normal ...

Footballing Humiliation At Its Worst

Burundi currently sit 145th in the FIFA World Rankings; it's safe to say they aren't exactly a footballing powerhouse.

So, with their first team sitting that low, one can only assume where their B team would be ranked (definitely bottom).

And, with said first team already eliminated from the running to qualify for next year's World Cup, this November international break provided the chance for a friendly between the two national sides tied to the same nation.

In the build-up, the game was dubbed a pretty straightforward victory for Burundi, possibly even a training-like attack vs defence exercise if everything went to plan.

So, when Mossi Nduwumwe scored a brace, followed by a Saidi Fataki strike in the 30th minute to put Burundi B 3-1 up before the half-time whistle, the first-team players trudged off, absolutely humiliated by what they had been subject to.

The second half saw a fightback; clearly a bit of a bollocking took place during the break. I certainly wouldn't have wanted to be in that changing room.

An Omar Moussa double meant that going into the last 15 minutes, the score sat poised at 3-3.

By this point the idea of a friendly had somewhat gone out of the window.

Burundi were determined to avoid possibly the worst defeat they could suffer, and Burundi B smelt blood against their, in theory, more talented countrymen.

Then, in added time, Burundi B managed to win themselves a late penalty, and, by the title of the article, I imagine you already know what happens next.

Djuma Nzeyimana stepped up, coolly slotting away the spot kick to break Burundi A hearts. I know that sounds dramatic for a friendly, but I think it's warranted for this one.

The final whistle blew to signal the end of an under-the-radar all-timer game in Burundi. The second team had done it, Burundi 3-4 Burundi B… What. On. Earth.

Are Burundi B Now Burundi A?

I think the main question to ask now is, where on earth does football in Burundi go from here?

I mean, it's one thing getting beaten by another country on your continent, but getting beaten by the worse version of yourself? That's nightmare fuel.

Imagine challenging your little brother to a race, knowing you'll win but wanting to get some practice in nonetheless. Then, instead of jogging your way to a simple victory, he ends up smoking you and sending you home in bewilderment.

Okay, maybe that's a bit of a long-winded analogy, but the moral of the story is, nobody wants to lose to their little brother.

If you're the Burundi coach now (if he manages to somehow keep his job), the only plausible answer is to have a full swap and send what was the A team to the depths of second-string international football.

In fact, if I were one of the regular national team players, I think I'd be seriously questioning my career choices at this point.

It is without doubt one of the most ridiculous, yet hilarious (sorry, not sorry) results to come from a football game ever.

It's not a game that will be talked about for centuries; I mean, has that ever been the case with a Burundi game?

But it will forever be a tale of footballing madness, and one I'd imagine the Burundi B players will be telling anyone who will listen for a very long time.
