Where did Everton finish last season?

Finishing 15th, the 2023/24 season was a largely disappointing one for the Toffee’s. Lingering around the relegation places until over halfway through the campaign, a strong run of form at the end of the season was enough to see them through to yet another year in the top flight.

In fairness, they were deducted eight points across the season due to a break in Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), so their end of season points tally was not reflective of their performance. However, on the flipside, Everton have no one to blame but themselves for their punishment, namely the directors and board.

However, that’s not the worst of it. On July 19th, it was confirmed that prospective buyers of the club 777 partners had pulled out of the deal due to the high possibility of inheriting heavy debt. A new ownership would have breathed new life into the club, and there are still talks in the works, but if nothing ends up materializing, Everton would be in a world of hurt.

Due to the financial restriction the club is currently experiencing, Everton are now having to raise significant funds over the course of the transfer window, which involves getting rid of some of their most valuable players. They have raised £70 million so far, but their inability to spend big on new signings could hurt them this season.

Best result: Everton 2-0 Liverpool. (Branthwaite 27', Calvert-Lewin 58').

Worst result: Chelsea 6-0 Everton. (Palmer 13', 18', 29', 64', Jackson 44', Gilchrist 90').

Who is Everton’s manager for 2023/24?

Dyche.jpg

After 18 months at Everton, Sean Dyche has settled in nicely. Burnley’s former managerial stalwart was appointed in January 2023 after Frank Lampard failed to impress. Taking over when the Toffee’s were in 19th and had failed to win a game since October, Dyche’s disciplined approach quickly caught on, and Everton saw immediate improvements.

Eventually carrying them to safety by just two points, 2023/24 was a chance for Dyche to take Everton clear of the relegation threatened teams. He would have succeeded as well had there been no points deductions. Without them, Everton would have finished level on points with 12th placed Bournemouth, well and truly a level above those in the relegation fight.

Even with the points deductions, Everton still ended the season 14 points clear of 18th placed Luton, so Everton had no added stress of being in a relegation battle in the last few weeks of the season.

However, it will be interesting to see how Dyche deals with losing Onana, Godfrey and potential Jarrad Branthwaite, who were excellent for him last season. He and the board will need to collaborate and communicate well in order to make smart signings and to limit the damage ahead of the new season.

Who is Everton’s player to watch for 2024/25? Jordan Pickford.

Pickford.jpg

Had it not been for Pickford, Everton could have been relegated in 2021/22 and 2022/23. England’s well established number one, Pickford has been excellent in between the sticks for the Toffee’s since signing from Sunderland in the summer of 2017, and has consistently been one of their best players.

A good distributor and a first class shot stopper, Pickford won his team points on countless occasions last season, and has a catalog of world class saves that Gordon Banks would be proud of, and his antiques and “shithousery” are beloved by the Everton fans.

Pickford once again looks set to play a big part in the Everton defense this season, as with the loss of Ben Godfrey and the likely departure of young center back Jarrad Branthwaite, and with no defensive signings coming in so far, their backline will be significantly depleted going into 2024/25.

However, the busier Pickford is, the better he becomes, and when he is in form, the opposition could play for a month of Sundays without scoring. He may become crucial if Everton find themselves in another relegation fight.

Season Prediction

Given the lack of incoming signings this transfer window, combined with the departure of already discussed key players, the upcoming season looks set to be a tricky one for Everton.

Always capable of causing a shock, beating Liverpool in April, Everton will fancy that they can cause a few upsets. But it is the lack of consistency that catches up to them throughout the season, as they seem unable to capitalize on a good result.

Sean Dyche is a manager who knows how to grind out results, as we learnt in his stint with Burnley, but Everton have been fortunate across the last couple of seasons to remain in the Premier League, and I feel they have just been prolonging the inevitable.

Prediction: 19th.
