Ipswich Forward Being Eyed-Up By Floundering Championship Giants

Ipswich Star in Line for Stunning Move to Fellow Championship Club

After a slow start to the season which saw EFL fans label them as not good enough to challenge for promotion, Ipswich Town and Kieran McKenna have done well to recover the ground they lost in the opening weeks, and now sit third in the second tier.

This is largely down to the Tractor Boys’ stellar attack - their 38 goals are the second-highest figure in the league, sitting only behind league leaders Coventry (53). However, despite their efficiency in front of goal, Ipswich do not have an out-and-out goalscorer, instead choosing to share the goals around.

And in a stunning turn of events, one of the side's main contributors, Jack Clarke, could leave the side in a move that would see him drop 15 places in the Championship table.

Free Falling

With seven goals to his name this campaign, Clarke is Ipswich’s second top scorer, eclipsed only by fellow winger and former Aston Villa man Jaden Philogene-Bidace - so why would he consider leaving a club where he is performing well, and even worse, in favour of Sheffield United, who are comfortably in the bottom half?

The Blades have had their struggles in attack this season, so much so that last month, they opted to bring in free agent Patrick Bamford as an alternative goalscoring option. So far, the move has been a success, with the former Chelsea youth talent netting three goals in seven games.

However, sitting 18th and nine points off the play-offs, they are far from an attractive destination for a player in the thick of the promotion fight.

Well, it appears that Clarke himself is not actually pursuing the move, with Sheffield United the party showing all the intent. Their interest in the tricky winger stems from the news that star man Gustavo Hamer could well leave the club in January, and a like-for-like replacement is needed if they are to stand the remotest chance of competing for promotion.

A player who can most accurately be described as a playmaking winger, Clarke has been the recipient of high praise over the course of his last three Championship seasons with Sunderland and Ipswich, scoring 34 goals and assisting a further 19 in 117 appearances.

A player of proven quality in the second tier, it is no surprise that surprise strugglers United are in pursuit of his signature - accustomed to competing at the top of the table, Chris Wilder is looking to rectify the situation as quickly as possible.

However, with only an outside chance of becoming promotion contenders, it is unlikely that Clarke would actively push for a move to Bramall Lane; the outlook at Portman Road is looking at lot more positive.

However, Sheffield United are even more unlikely to drop their interest - should Hamer leave, they would be without their talisman, and if you’re going to challenge for promotion, you need a player who can pull the proverbial rabbit out of the proverbial hat.
