This Premier League Icon Is STILL Playing at 41... And He Might Be Coming Back to England

Premier League Veteran Eyes Sensational Return to England at 41

In football, the words 'icon' and 'legend' are thrown around perhaps a little bit haphazardly. However, there are still plenty of names who have been and gone through the sport that are well deserving of that particular moniker.

Furthermore, longevity in the sport is always regarded as a serious accomplishment. So, for a true legend of the game to end his playing days in his native country for one of his former clubs at the age of 41 seems a fitting farewell, right?

Well, not for this veteran of the game - one Premier League legend is set on a move back to European football this coming transfer window at the end of his current contract.

Thiago Silva Eyes Blockbuster European Return Aged 41

The man of the hour is the legendary Thiago Silva, of course.

The Brazilian centre-back is one of the true great defenders of the game, with his storied career taking him across Europe most notably with the likes of Milan, PSG and Chelsea.

With the lattermost of the three, he picked up the Champions League in 2021 to add a crowning glory to his glittering 30-strong trophy cabinet, and is revered as one of the best Chelsea centre-backs in history despite joining them on a free transfer at the ripe age of 36.

After four successful seasons in West London, he departed back to his native Brazil by way of Fluminense, with whom he had made 109 league appearances for between 2006 and 2008.

After two more strong campaigns back home, Silva has confirmed that he will be leaving the club this winter as the Brazilian Serie A season comes to a close. However, rather than heading off to a typical retirement league, the 41-year-old has his sights set on a return to the top instead with former club Chelsea interested in making his Stamford Bridge return happen.

Chelsea Seek Silva Deal

Before any move can happen for Silva, however, Chelsea would first need to make some sales in their defensive options as per Simon Williams.

On the matter, he said:

“SPTC Sources understand that Silva has communicated that he would return to Chelsea as a player next month and would even come back on a wage packet that would suit the rest of the squad and the current structure.

“He ideally wants to play for a team in or around London, and of course, returning to Chelsea would be the ultimate move for him. But he’s open to other opportunities as well.

“On Chelsea’s side, sources say that unless there are any injuries or sales of Axel Disasi and Tosin Arabarioyo/Benoit Badiashile, then there is no room in the squad for any more centre backs. If two of the above are sold or injured, then there would be space and it could happen.

“But as of right now, there have been no plans to sell any centre backs in the winter window.

“So unless that changes, and it always can of course, Silva will not be coming back to Chelsea. As I say though, circumstances could easily change and Chelsea may well decide to try and sell a centre back to make it happen. But I haven’t yet heard that they will do that and as of now, they’ve not made any plans to.”

One Legend to Another - Terry Welcomes Idea of Silva Return

Speaking of iconic Chelsea defenders, another in John Terry has urged his former club to make the deal happen, highlighting that Silva would bring much-needed experience to the Blues' back-line.

Speaking on his TikTok, Terry said:

“I’d just like to add, Thiago Silva is available. Listen to me, a man with great experience, a man with a great relationship with our football club. His two kids are in our academy. No doubt he’s gonna be back in London with his family over Christmas. I would love to see this man back at our football club.

“Playing with these players. Now, I’m not saying he has to play every week, but just the experience he can bring, playing alongside someone like that, probably goes back to my role under Antonio Conte back in 2017, when we won the league.

“I didn’t play, but I had a role to play within the group. Be that buffer between the players, the managers, the owners, and have that bit of experience.”

Where Will Thiago Silva Go?

It isn't just Chelsea who are interested in bringing Silva's veteran instincts into their defences, with an understandable plethora of clubs keen on bringing the 41-year-old in this winter.

Former club Milan are interested in bringing Silva back to the club, whilst transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has stated that there are (of course) options available for him in the MLS and Middle East.

A return to London in any case may present the most appealing option for Silva, however, with West Ham, Crystal Palace, Fulham and Brentford all amongst the chasing pack of capital clubs all interested in his services this winter.

The former PSG stalwart has identified a move back to Europe as his next move, as the veteran is keen on making his way into the Brazil squad for the coming 2026 World Cup in the United States - if he does go, and plays, he would overtake Northern Ireland's Pat Jennings as the 4th-oldest player in World Cup history.
