Wantaway Serie A Striker Circled by Premier League Sides

Europa League Marksman Offered to Premier League Clubs

Whenever the rarefied opportunity presents itself to sign a Europa League-calibre player as a bottom-half Premier League side, very few pass up the chance to make the signing.

To bring on a player with experience in continental competitions as well as a history of succeeding in the domestic format can change the entire outlook of a side - the player brings added quality, expertise, and a morale boost to boot.

This is exactly the scenario that Everton, West Ham, Leeds and, although they aren’t bottom-half, Sunderland are in, as Italian giants AS Roma are looking to offload Ukrainian striker Artem Dovbyk.

Who is Artem Dovbyk?

Standing at 189 cm and with a build comparable to that of Adama Traore, 28-year-old Dovbyk is a physical specimen, seemingly purpose-built for the tough-tackling physicality of England’s top flight.

Though now a well-known name across Europe, the striker spent much of his career in obscurity, bouncing between lesser-known clubs in both the Danish and Ukrainian first divisions before finally sealing a move to a top club in 2023.

Having scored 54 goals in 86 games for Ukrainian side SC Dnipro-1, Dovbyk was picked up by Girona that summer, and their new striker inspired the entire team - the Spanish outfit rivalled Barcelona and Real Madrid at the top of the table for the majority of the season, only running out of steam in the final weeks of the campaign, finishing third.

Though he won no silverware, Dovbyk’s 24 goals in 39 games were achievement enough, and suddenly, every major club in Europe was after him, including Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid.

Ultimately choosing Roma over all other suitors, it seemed the marksman had made the right call, as in his first season in the Italian capital, he found the net 17 times in all competitions as his side finished fifth in the Serie A and reached the latter stages of both the Europa League and Coppa Italia.

However, this season has seen a radical drop-off in form from the striker - in 11 league games and four Europa League fixtures, the Ukrainian has found the net just twice, with his last goal coming against Parma in late October.

Needing a prolific striker if they are to realise their competitive ambitions this year, Roma are looking to move the big frontman on in January, and though he has been offered to a host of clubs, it appears to be Everton who are leading the race.

With that being said, it is being reported that if he is forced to make a move, Dovbyk would rather continue playing football in Italy, which at least temporarily restricts Premier League interest to distant admiration. However, a lot can change in a month, and with both Beto and Thierno Barry misfiring in front of goal, the Toffees will be hopeful of securing a move before the 31st of January.
