Last five results when Tottenham have played Arsenal:
Considering many were tipping them for a title charge early on in the 2023/24 season, a 5th place finish for Spurs was an underwhelming end to Ange Postecoglou’s first campaign in charge.
Unbeaten in the first 10 games of last season, at the end of which they topped the league, a run of four defeats in five games put paid to any title aspirations they had held up until then. Despite playing entertaining football under Postecoglou, it seemed that Spurs still retained the “bottle” for which they are mocked by rival teams.
Their end of season form was not much better, losing five of their last seven fixtures, and they were almost punished, as a late season push by Chelsea saw them pull to within a win of fifth spot. However, a win on the final day at Sheffield held them off, and Spurs just about sealed Europa League football.
Their lack of a striker was clear for all to see following Harry Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich, and Tottenham are yet to find a replacement in the current transfer window. Should they find a suitable forward to head the attack, it could be the piece of the jigsaw they need to propel themselves into Premier League contention.
Best result: Aston Villa 0-4 Tottenham. (Maddison 50’, Johnson 53’, Son 90+1’, Werner 90+4’).
Worst result: Newcastle 4-0 Tottenham. (Isak 30’, 51’, Gordon 32’, Schar 87’).
Already a fan favorite within the Spurs community, as well as outside it, Ange Postecouglou endeared himself to the fans in the first weeks of the season, winning the manager of the month award for August.
His easy approach, exciting football and habit of saying ‘mate’ after every press conference statement, the Aussie looks to be an excellent choice for a long term in charge of the North Londoners.
Arriving from Celtic where he had won the domestic treble in 2022/23, Postecoglou came with significant pedigree, having been nominated for the FIFA World Coach of the Year award that same campaign. Within his first seven months at Spurs, he won the London coach of the year award for his exploits early in the season.
However, a drop in form and a lack of defensive stability hurt his side in the second half of the campaign, and the chase for Champions league football soon became a chase for any form of European competition.
Postecoglou will be looking for good value options to bolster his backline this summer if his plans are to come to fruition, and will be thorough in his search for a quality out and out striker to better round his squad.
Brought in last summer for £40 million, it seemed at first that the price was a bargain. Maddison started the season in fine form, notching five assists and three goals in his first eight games for the club.
However, after an injury in November, Maddison was sidelined for the best part of two months, and upon his return, seemed to have lost some of the sharpness and alertness with which he had started the campaign.
His loss of form towards the end of the season cost him a call up to the England squad for Euro 2024, something which at the start of the season seemed to be a formality for him to be offered. Devastated by his exclusion, the Englishman is spending the off season to ensure complete fitness and maximum strength heading into the start of the season.
A fully fit Maddison is almost unplayable at his best, threading impossible passes and running defenses from side to side, and if he is standing over a free kick within shooting range, he hits his spot more often than not. If he stays fit for the majority of the season, he has the ability to inspire excellence from spurs.
Spurs have re-discovered some form of belief since Postecoglou was appointed as head coach, and their early season form offered a glimpse of what they could become; electric football, stubborn pressing, first class combat in the midfield, and a never say die attitude.
With some of their more senior squad depth in Perisic, Dier and Ndombele gone on free transfers, Spurs now need to be shrewd in the transfer market to ensure they recruit exciting new talent alongside experienced campaigners who will bring calm and composure to the side.
Should they do this, and bring in goal scorer, there is no reason why they shouldn’t qualify for Champions league football. However, their key players must stay fit, and the poor sequences of results that lighted them last season must be avoided.
