The Ghanaian International Who is Quietly Becoming One of the EFL’s Most Dangerous Attackers

There’s no two ways about it; Frank Lampard’s Coventry City are absolutely flying. 10 games in the EFL Championship - not a single loss, just seven goals conceded and a staggering 29 goals scored.

Whilst this emphatic goal tally has showcased the star-studded Sky Blues’ attack in a spotlight, it has helped unlock the full potential of some of the promising talent they have picked up in recent years.

One player in particular is Brandon Thomas-Asante - a man who has burst onto the scene with no warning. The Ghanaian is nonchalantly chasing teammate Haji Wright in the league’s top scorer charts, with what has been a stellar start to the season.

However, the former non-League journeyman may have even surprised himself with the early numbers he’s racked up.

A Quite Incredible Start

Let's get down to the facts and figures. Brandon Thomas-Asante, nicknamed BTA, has already netted six goals from 10 games this season. Nine of those games he started in, as he’s accumulated a total of 782 minutes of playing time.

The 26-year-old has also added three assists to his portfolio, meaning he averages a goal contribution in every 87 minutes of play. The winger/striker/attacking midfielder - whatever you want to describe him as - has also grabbed four goals and one assist in his last four games amongst Coventry’s 14-goal haul.

The biggest question mark with these impeccable statistics is what on earth the former Salford man did over the summer. Last term, he only amassed four goals in the second tier - six in all competitions.

In the years prior with West Bromwich Albion, the highest goal output Thomas-Asante achieved was 11 in the Championship. Whilst that is still an incredibly respectable number, the Coventry forward is set to blow that figure completely out of the park this season.

One major attribute of Brandon Thomas-Asante’s is his versatility. As implied previously, he doesn’t necessarily have a trademark position. Frank Lampard has played the attacker all across the front four and he has done a splendid job no matter what.

The Ghanaian currently stands as the league’s second highest goalscorer. Only teammate and talisman Haji Wright is leading him with eight. Meanwhile Hull City’s Oli McBurnie and other fellow teammate Victor Torp share the second place spot.

However, BTA’s three assists do in fact put the forward as the front-runner in terms of goal contributions - having nine in total. Furthermore, he also occupies the fourth highest player rating in the league this season, with a rating of 7.62 according to FotMob.

How did Brandon Thomas-Asante Get to This Point?

At the age of 26, Thomas-Asante has already played for a wealth of clubs in the English footballing pyramid. Seven to be exact - playing in every league from the National League South up to the Championship.

He started his journey at MK Dons, after graduating from the emerging academy system. After playing 21 games at League One level, the then 19-year-old went out on loan to Sutton United in the National League. He played just eight games for the U’s, before dropping down another step to Oxford City.

Oxford City played in the sixth tier, giving Thomas-Asante a chance of expression. He ended up netting three goals in 15 games for the Oxfordshire outfit, before revisiting the fifth division with Ebbsfleet United.

After playing just three games in one month with the Fleet, a newly promoted League Two side in Salford City acquired the attacker on a permanent deal. It was here where BTA would spend a positive three years of his career.

The Ghanaian became one of League Two’s most exciting wingers, after accrediting 39 goal contributions to the 107 league appearances he made for the Ammies. This earned him a move two jumps up to West Brom in the second tier.

From then on, Thomas-Asante registered 21 goals and two assists in two seasons for the Baggies before making the short trip across the West Midlands to Coventry City, where the rest is history - despite a hurdled start.

What Has Changed This Year?

There is no doubt Brandon Thomas-Asante struggled upon his arrival to the Sky Blues in 2024. However, that wasn’t relieved one bit by the club’s extremely poor start to last season.

Since manager Frank Lampard’s arrival this time last year, he has bred new life into the West Midlands outfit. The manager’s rejuvenation helped take Coventry down to the wire last season, after they bowed out of the playoffs in dramatic fashion following their fifth place finish.

Although, the former Chelsea monarch is still finding ways to improve day-by-day. One of those extensive improvements seems to be the sheer number of chances his team creates.

So far this campaign, the Sky Blues have registered an astonishing 173 shots - 59 on target. This has led to an xG of 23.31 and rewarded them with the best attacking statistics in the Championship.

It is only plausible that the attackers involved in such a vibrant team have benefited tremendously from the enhanced opportunities. This has gone hand-in-hand with Brandon Thomas-Asante’s development, as his output has skyrocketed - like many others’ in the squad.

It is going to take a lot to destroy the Coventry beast and as long as they keep up their spectacular fashion, Thomas-Asante is only going to carry on flourishing.
