What is the German DFB-Pokal format?

The German DFB-Pokal is the cup competition in Germany. Similar to the English FA Cup, it is a knockout competition; however, there are some key differences.

The DFB-Pokal includes 64 teams: the 18 teams from both the German Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga, alongside the top four from 3. Liga. The final 24 spots are then assigned by region, with each region’s slot being awarded in a local competition format.

In round one, the 64 teams are placed into two pots, decided based on league position, and drawn against each other with the teams in pot two playing at home. This means that teams lower in terms of league position will end up playing against teams higher up. This continues into round two, where two pots are again drawn - lower-ranked teams play at home. This has often led to big teams being knocked out by lower division or even amateur sides.

From round three to the end of the tournament, however, the draw is taken at random.

Each round is played as one game. If the game results in a draw, teams play extra time or potentially penalties. A winner is decided in every round of the competition. The final is then played in Berlin, with the winner being crowned DFB-Pokal champions.

This competition is by far the most historic in Germany, with plenty of teams taking home the title over the years. Unsurprisingly, Bayern Munich has won the most titles, having won the competition on 20 occasions. However, they haven’t won it since the 2019/20 season, with recent winners including Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, and current champions Bayer Leverkusen.

But who will win the German DFB-Pokal this season?
